I run AScR with an SMG and that thing cuts through everyone. I one on one'd a heavy three times in a row and won eahc time using this combo. Twas magical.

Joining a player corp doesn't limit the types of battles you can join. You can still join merc battles from the star map. And yeah you don't really need to worry about Clone Reserves outside of PC.

PC is... not where you want to be. You'd have to have a large array of competent players (full proto) who can play well with one another and can be active whenever called upon. Also TP sort of controls PC and they will wreck your face in the minut...
